Dissipation - Penwith Society of Arts
Dissipation
Acrylic on Board
£560.00
This painting has been selected by The Penwith Gallery for their Associate Members’ exhibition. This is a vibrant show, with many artists submitting a wide variety of approaches to their subject. Many fine works do not make the final selection, so I was delighted to have been given this opportunity!
“Dissipation” began, as most of my paintings do, in my sketch book. A series of thumbnails and notes evolve until I feel ready to put paint to canvas (or board, in this case). Even though I have a composition mapped out, there is always the part that remains in the imagination; the part I need to hold on to tightly as I work, or the piece can wander off…
It took months to complete this piece – longer than most. Many layers of paint were applied, but the objective was always there, guiding me.
It is about capturing a fleeting moment, coupled with a sense of something more solid, though these feelings tend to group and then separate again, hence the title.
Beyond that…I prefer to let the viewer go on their own journey.
Penwith Gallery is the home of the Penwith Society of Arts.
The art gallery, formerly a pilchard packing factory, has a remarkable complex of buildings, including three public galleries, Porthmeor Printmakers Workshop, ten artists’ studios, a sculpture courtyard, shop and archive. This allows for an exciting programme of both contemporary and historical exhibitions year round.
The Society was founded in 1949 by Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson, Peter Lanyon, Bernard Leach, Sven Berlin and Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, amongst others. Later members have included Patrick Heron, Terry Frost and Henry Moore (honorary member). This association with so many progressive and influential artists has given the Penwith Society a unique place in British art history.
Today the Society continues to play a central role in the thriving and vibrant St. Ives art community, exhibiting contemporary art from Cornwall and beyond.
I currently have two of my paintings, Deep & Looking For The Cave, on display at Leel, on Back Road East in Downlong.
"Leel is an artisan shop and takeaway cafe nestled in the heart of St Ives, in the labyrinth of streets known locally as ‘Downalong’. [sic.]
A treasure trove of handmade products, paintings, ceramics, jewellery and homeware.
We also house an artisan slushie and coffee shop with locals loyalty card, serving our community year round at affordable prices.
Here you’ll also find the finest food products and gifts to take a little taste of Cornwall home with you."
